A pilot episode, "The Cage", was filmed in 1964 starring Jeffrey Hunter as Capt Christopher Pike, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, and Majel Barrett as Number One (First Officer). The episode was not shown in the US until 1988 but parts of the story were colourised and inserted into the 1966 two-part story, "The Menagerie".
NBC commissioned a second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Hunter turned down the chance to return and was replaced by William Shatner. Nimoy returned as Spock, who became First Officer, and Majel Barrett became Nurse Chapel.
