“I am Captain Nemo. I have been asleep for 100 years aboard my submarine, Nautilus. I would probably still be left encapsulated had it not been for two intrepid agents of American Naval Intelligence…who quite by chance came upon my ship trapped by seismic underwater quakes…”
The Return Of Captain Nemo is a three-part 1978 American science fiction adventure television miniseries produced by IRWIN ALLEN and directed by Alex March. The underwater sequences were directed by Paul Stader. It was loosely based on characters and settings from Jules Verne's 1870 novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, and was written by six screenwriters including Robert Bloch (who makes no mention of the series in his autobiography, Once Around The Bloch). The miniseries has been considered an attempt by producer Allen to duplicate the success of his Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Parts of the eight foot Seaview miniature were used in the construction of Nemo's submarine, the Nautilus.
It originally aired on CBS in the US between March 8 and March 22, 1978. This was intended to be the first story-arc in an ongoing serial but ratings were dismal, and the series never materialized. Instead, this proved to be Allen's final foray into weekly science fiction television.
The Return of Captain Nemo was a co-production between Irwin Allen Productions and Warner Bros Television. Portions of the three episodes were re-edited into a 102-minute version released theatrically overseas as The Amazing Captain Nemo.
The BBC broadcast the miniseries over three consecutive evenings in 1981 and over three Fridays in 1983. They also showed the film version in 1985, which was also aired by LWT in 1995 and 1997.
The BBC called this "a spectacular three-part undersea adventure" and explained that "this American television production updates the adventures of Jules Verne 's famous literary character - the amazing Captain Nemo."
Two US Navy divers discover the Captain and his strange craft Nautilus wedged deep in the Pacific. They free him from a state of suspended animation and enlist his help in overcoming Professor Waldo Cunningham , an evil genius who is threatening to destroy Washington unless he is paid one billion dollars in gold.
