Bruton Music was founded by Robin Phillips in 1976/77 to produce a music library for ATV Music, in competition with KPM, De Wolfe's and Chappell. It was named after Bruton Street, where it was formed. In 1982, the company was bought by Michael Jackson who then sold it to Zomba Group in 1986 for up to £3m. Zomba would also buy Chappell in 1988. BMG Music bought it in 2002 and sold it on to the Universal Music Group in 2007.
In the UK, Channel 4 and ITV have been known to use music from the library, and recordings were used in TV series including Prisoner: Cell Block H, The Ren & Stimpy Show, Sesame Street and The Simpsons, and the films Pulp Fiction (1994) and Fight Club (1999). The song "Hit And Run" by actor David Easter was used in the disco film Music Machine (1979). You can also hear its music when you see animated logos for The Video Collection (1985-89) and Pixar (1986), and adverts for Motorola and Vodafone.
Among the artists who have composed and or contributed music to the label are David Arnold, Hal David, George Fenton, Louis Clark, Alan Hawkshaw, the James Taylor Quartet, Jack Dorsey, Johnny Pearson, and Denis King.
