Everybody’s pin-up. Nobody’s fool.
British sitcom TV series created by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft and produced by the BBC. It originally aired on BBC 1 between 1972 and 1985, over 10 series and totalling 69 episodes.
Appearing in all episodes were Mollie Sugden (Mrs Slocombe), John Inman (Mr Humphries), Frank Thornton (Captain Peacock), Wendy Richard (Miss Brahms), and Nicholas Smith (Mr Rumbold).
Other main characters were played by Trevor Bannister (Mr Lucas, series 1-7), Larry Martyn (Mr Mash, 1-3), who was replaced by Arthur English (Mr Harman, 4-10), and Harold Bennett (Young Mr Grace, 1-8). Bannister was replaced by Mike Berry (Mr Spooner, 8-10) in 1981. Arthur Brough was Mr Grainger, head of the men's department (1-5), but he died in 1978 and was replaced by James Hayter (Mr Tebbs, series 6) and Alfie Bass (Mr Goldberg, series 7). For the final three series, Mr Humphries became head of the men's department.
The theme tune was composed by Ronnie Hazlehurst and written by David Croft.
In 1977, as for many other British sitcoms of the time, a feature film was released. It followed the staff of Grace Brothers taking a package holiday together on the Costa Plonka in Spain while the store is closed for redecoration.
A pilot episode, entitled "Are You Being Served?" was broadcast on September 8, 1972 as part of Comedy Playhouse. It was written by Lloyd and Croft, and directed by Bernard Thompson. It guest starred Michael Knowles.
